Chapter 22

The pub was relatively quiet. A few elderly men were propping up the bar and two teenage boys were playing pool and giggling like schoolgirls. Nelson found them a table near the window and went to buy some drinks. While she waited for him to return, she stared out into the car park. The white Corolla sat a few spaces from the bike. However, the occupant didn’t appear to be planning to get out. Nelson had said the driver was male but she couldn’t actually make out who was inside. She had no idea about the man’s identity and even less idea about what his interest was in her or Nelson. They hadn’t done anything suspicious, other than break into Eddie’s house, and that had been days ago.

Nelson slid onto the bench seat next to her and glanced outside. “What’s he doin’?”

“Nothing, he’s just parked.”

Moving closer, Nelson nuzzled her neck and whispered, “I wish we were parked.”

Heat flared through her body and she squirmed in her seat as she imagined Nelson doing what he liked to her in the back seat of a large car.

Nelson chuckled and kissed her neck before peering around her and out the window. “He’s been on my tail half the day.”

“Really? How did you even notice him?”

“He was originally followin’ Admay. He ditched her in favor of me mid-morning’.”

“Admay?”

“I figured the only way to find out who Chessie’s client was would be to follow him. He drove to the Golf Course at one, picked up Admay in the car park and drove down to the secluded area by the river. White Corolla man followed. I managed to get close enough to watch without bein’ spotted. Admay and Chessie chatted for a while and he handed her some papers. Suspicions confirmed, I made my way back to the bike and came to find you. The Corolla followed.”

Florence was excited and dismayed that she had been right about Admay. Chessie had said he was meeting a client, and all the evidence pointed to Admay’s marriage being in trouble. Although, Florence couldn’t quite quench the niggling doubt in the back of her mind. “You don’t think the man the other night was Chessie, do you?”

Nelson shook his head. “Nope. He loves Charlotte. It was definitely business; besides Chessie has bad knees from playin’ soccer.”

The comment made her shudder as the memory of what they had witnessed came back to her. She was glad it wasn’t Chessie. Now that was settled she really didn’t want to think about it. Regardless of who was banging Admay in the bush, and how much finding the man might give them a lead, she didn’t need to see that again.

“Good. So now what?”

He sipped his beer and appeared pensive. “Did you find out anythin’ from Carol?”

“Other than the fact she’s like a bitch in heat around you and still remembers the time you were caught watching her skinny-dipping with the girl guides in Mueller’s pond, you mean?”

A huge grin spread across Nelson’s face.
